A spa resort since antiquity
Loutraki, the town of Thermal Springs, is the most ancient bathing resort in Greece. During antiquity it was known as Thermai, named after Thermia Artemida, the goddess of hot mineral springs. A famous spring in the ancient city of Thermae was held to be beloved of the gods and was the first health resort to be recorded in the annals of world history. During the Roman era, the military leader Sulla was cured in its spa waters and thus its secrets were disseminated throughout the entire Roman world. Plenty of churches built during the Byzantine era also point to the importance of the town, a popular resort with the kings of Byzantium who spent their holidays there in order to benefit form its splendid climate. To the northwest of Loutraki lies Heraion, the famous sanctuary of the goddess Hera. A cape at its end, a sheer jewel, one of the most beautiful stone-built lighthouses of Greece, Malagavi, has warned passing ships of the treacherous rocks below since its completion in 1897.
